A Word On WhatsApp

The facts...

- If you live in a country in the European Economic Area (which includes the UK & the European Union), and any other included country or territory (collectively referred to as the European Region), you must be at least 16 years old (or such greater age required in your country) to register for and use WhatsApp.

- WhatsApp is a commonly used platform for communicating via voice, text and to send media such as photos, videos, attachments and links.

- WhatsApp is often cited by schools and by parents as the most commonly used platform that children share inappropriate material and are subject to cyber bullying and anti-social behaviour often by sharing media files and attachments.

 
SchoolsMobile’s position on WhatsApp:

- SchoolsMobile will always recommend that parents adhere to the terms and conditions set by specific Apps, inclduing WhatsApp. 

- If a child has somehow been given or gained access to WhatsApp under the age of 16, we add in an additional safety net for parents. Within the European Economic Area, SchoolsMobile policies activate a control over WhatsApp to block media files such as photos, videos and attachments. This control is applied to policies designed for those under the age of 16.

- The intent of this control is to help mitigate the potential risks associated with sharing and receipt of potentially inappropriate media files and attachments.

- We strongly recommend parents adopt age-appropriate policies that control the use of WhatsApp for children under the age of 16.

We know that some parents use WhatsApp with their children to communicate with distant or overseas relatives and friends.
 

Parents can opt out of the SchoolsMobile control of WhatsApp but need to accept the following:

- You confirm that you have read and understand SchoolsMobile’s strong recommendation to adopt age-appropriate policies children under the age of 16.

- If you knowlingly allow them access to the app and you choose to opt out of WhatsApp control this may increase the risk of your child being exposed to inappropriate material via media and files or other malicious content delivered via the platform.

- You accept responsibility for monitoring the access and potential use of WhatsApp by your children.
